解説 Definition
「腸」は消化管の一部で、食べ物の消化吸収や老廃物の排泄に関わる重要な器官です。また、身体内部の感覚や本能的な反応を指す表現として、直感的な判断や感覚を伝えるときにも使われます。直感的な選択を表す際には、理屈では説明しづらい身体の声としてのニュアンスが含まれます。
Gut can mean the stomach or intestines inside the body. It can also mean a strong natural feeling about something, as in intuition. In everyday English, the second meaning is common in informal speech.

gut は古英語 guttas「腸、はらわた」に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *gut-、印欧祖語 *gheu-「注ぐ」へさかのぼります。もとは体内の“通り道”の感覚で、腸が感情の座と考えられたため、「直感」という意味も生まれました。関連語は gutter、guts です。
