instinct はラテン語 instinctus に由来し、in-「中へ」＋ stinguere「突き刺す・駆り立てる」と考えられます。理屈より先に内側からつつかれて動く感じが「本能」につながり、distinct や extinct にも同じ stinct の語根が見えます。
Instinct comes from Latin instinctus, from a verb meaning "to urge on" or "to prick." The original image is of something pushing a person or animal from within. That is how the word developed the idea of an inner natural impulse rather than a reasoned choice.
