古フランス語 achever（完了する）から。a-（～へ）+ chief/chef（頭、頂点）が原形で、「頂点に達する→成し遂げる」が原義。chief（長）やchief同根のcap（頭）と関連。目標の「頂」に到達するイメージが「達成」の意味を生んだ。
Achieve came into English from Old French achever, meaning "to complete." It goes back to a form built on chief or chef, meaning "head" or "top," so the older image was "to reach the end or highest point." From that, the meaning developed into "to succeed in doing something." It is related to chief.
