astonishment は astonish に名詞語尾 -ment が付いた語。astonish は古フランス語 estonir、さらに俗ラテン語 extonare「雷で打って気絶させる」にさかのぼり、ex-「外へ」+ tonare「雷鳴をとどろかせる」から成る。関連語に astonish、thunder があり、「雷に打たれたような驚き」と考えると意味がつかみやすい。
Astonishment is formed from astonish plus the noun ending -ment. Astonish came from Old French and earlier Vulgar Latin *extonare, based on ex- "out" and tonare "to thunder."
