To astound someone means to surprise them very much. It is stronger than the ordinary word surprise and is often used for facts, news, or achievements that seem hard to believe.

astound の語源・成り立ち Etymology
astound は古フランス語 estoner、さらにラテン語 ex-「外へ」+ tonare「雷鳴する」にさかのぼる。detonate や thunder と同じく「雷」の衝撃が核にあり、もとは「雷に打たれたように呆然とさせる」こと。だから単なる驚きより、感覚が飛ぶほどの強い衝撃を表す。
Astound came through Old French estoner from Latin roots including tonare, meaning "to thunder." The original image was of being struck senseless like by thunder. From that, the meaning developed into causing very strong shock or amazement.
