astounding は astound＋-ing。astound は中英語を経て古フランス語 estoner、さらに俗ラテン語 *extonare にさかのぼり、ex-「外へ」＋ tonare「雷が鳴る」から成る。関連語は astonish, thunder で、「雷に打たれたように驚かせる」が原義。
