amazing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
amazing は amaze からでき、古英語由来の a-（強意）+ maze（迷路につながる語）で、原義は「人を迷路に入れたように当惑させる」。amaze や maze が同根で、今の「すごい」は「呆然とするほど」が明るい意味へ転じた結果。
Amazing comes from amaze, which originally meant to confuse or bewilder. That older verb is linked to maze, with the idea of being mentally lost as if in a labyrinth. Later, the sense became more positive, so something "amazing" was something so striking that it left you stunned.
