awesome は awe「畏怖」＋形容詞語尾 -some から成り、awe は古ノルド語 agi や古英語 ege 系の「恐れ」にさかのぼります。awful や awestruck も同じ核を共有します。今の「最高な」より先に、「畏れを起こすほど圧倒的」が原義だと見える語です。
