campaignはフランス語campagneを経て、ラテン語campus「野原・平地」にさかのぼる語です。camp-はcampやcampusと同根で、もとは野外の軍事行動を指しました。広い野で人や物を動かす絵を思うと、今の「大がかりな運動」の意味も自然に見えます。
