architect はフランス語 architecte、ラテン語 architectus を経て、ギリシャ語 arkhitekton「親方の建築者」に由来する。arkhi- は「長」、tekton は「作る人」で、technical や tectonic も同根。だから architect は「全体を統べて設計する人」という語感をもつ。
Architect came into English through French and Latin from Greek arkhitekton. This Greek word joined arkhi-, meaning "chief," with tekton, meaning "builder" or "craftsman."
