romance は、人と人との恋愛関係や、恋愛をめぐる甘さ・ときめきを指す名詞です。また、小説や映画では恋愛を中心に描く物語や作風を表すこともあります。日常会話では実際の恋愛関係にも、作品中の恋愛要素にも使われる語です。

romance の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 romanice（ローマ風の言葉で）が古フランス語 romanz（俗ラテン語で書かれた物語）となり、中世の騎士道恋愛物語を指すようになった。rom- の語根は「ローマ」に由来し、Roman（ローマの）と同根。冒険と恋愛の物語がローマ風の言語で語られたことから「恋愛」の意味が生まれた。
Romance comes through Old French romanz from Latin romanice, meaning "in the Roman way" or "in the Romance language." It first referred to stories written in the everyday language of the people, not in formal Latin. Because many of these stories were about knights, adventure, and courtly love, the word gradually became linked with love as well. It shares its root with Roman.
