鉄道とは、鉄のレールとその上を走る列車による交通の仕組みです。線路・鉄道網・鉄道会社を指すこともあり、都市と都市をつなぐ重要な交通インフラです。
A railroad is a system of tracks used by trains, or the company that operates them. The word is mainly used in American English; British English more often uses railway. It can refer to both passenger and freight transport.

rail（横木・レール）+ road（道）の複合語。rail は古フランス語 reille（棒）、ラテン語 regula（まっすぐな棒＝定規）に由来。同根語に regular（規則的な）、rule（規則）がある。「棒状のレールを敷いた道」という直訳的な造語で、19世紀の鉄道発明期に生まれた。
