loggerheadは方言的なlogger（重く鈍い木の塊のようなもの）+ head（頭）から出た語です。beheadやheadlongと同じheadを含み、もとは大きく鈍い頭のもの全般を指したため、頭の大きいアカウミガメの名にもなりました。
