覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
月名としては September と必ず大文字で書き、「9月」を表します。sept- は seven と同系の「7」なのに9月なのは、古いローマ暦が3月始まりでSeptemberが第7月だったためです。in September、September 15th、September weather の形で、前置詞・日付・季節の語とまとめて覚えましょう。
The apparent number mismatch is the best memory key: sept- means “seven,” yet September is now month nine. In an early Roman calendar that began with March, September occupied the seventh position; later calendar changes moved it to ninth while its name remained. Write the month with a capital S in standard English. Learn it in patterns such as in September, September weather, and September 15th. Also place it between August and October to secure its position in the modern calendar.

september の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 September(第7の月)に由来し、septem(7)が語根。古代ローマ暦では3月始まりだったため7番目だったが、1月始まりへの改暦で9月にずれた。関連語: septet(七重奏)、septennial(7年ごとの)。名前と実際の月がずれている歴史的経緯が興味深い。
September comes through Latin September, the name of what was originally the seventh month in an early Roman calendar. Its base is Latin septem, meaning “seven.” When January and February became established before March in the calendar sequence, the month shifted to ninth position, but the inherited name remained. English adopted the Latin month name through French and later scholarly influence. Related formations such as septet preserve the same numerical root more transparently.
