October is the tenth month of the modern calendar year, coming after September and before November. In the Northern Hemisphere, it falls in autumn and includes October 31, when Halloween is celebrated.

The element octo- means “eight,” as in octopus and octave. October is now the tenth month because it was the eighth month in an early Roman calendar whose year began in March.
