noun

10がつ

解説 Definition

1年の10番目の月。秋の季節にあたる。

October is the tenth month of the modern calendar year, coming after September and before November. In the Northern Hemisphere, it falls in autumn and includes October 31, when Halloween is celebrated.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

October は月名なので通常は October と大文字で書き、前置詞は in October、日付なら on October 31st とする。octo- は「8」で、octopusoctave と共通するが、古代ローマ暦では8番目だった月が暦の変更後に10月になった、と結び付ければ数字のずれも覚えられる。

Write October with a capital O because English month names are proper nouns. Use in October for the month generally, but on October 31st for a specific date. The element octo- means “eight,” as in octopus and octave. October is now the tenth month because it was the eighth month in an early Roman calendar whose year began in March. Linking the old number eight with the modern position ten makes the apparently mismatched name easier to remember.

october の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 octō(8)+ -ber(月の接尾辞)で、古代ローマ暦で「8番目の月」。後に1月始まりに改暦され10月にずれた。関連語:octopus(8本足)、octave(8度音程)。数字の8と月の名がずれている理由は暦の改変にある。

October comes through Old English and Latin from Latin October. Its first element is related to octo, “eight,” because October was the eighth month in the early Roman calendar, which began in March. After January and February came to stand at the beginning of the year, October became the tenth month while retaining its established name. The same numerical element appears in octave and octopus.
