ラテン語novem（9）に由来。古代ローマ暦では3月が年の始まりだったため、9番目の月を意味した。後にユリウス暦で1月始まりになっても名前は変わらず11月のまま残った。関連語：novice（初心者＝新しい人）、novel（新しい）。
