古英語 betidan にさかのぼり、接頭辞 be- と「時が来る・起こる」を表す tidan から成る。tide や tidings と同根で、「時の巡りが出来事を連れてくる」という感覚から「起こる・降りかかる」の意味になった。
Betide goes back to Old English betidan, made from the prefix be- and tidan, meaning "to happen" or "to come in time." It is related to tide and tidings, which share the idea of time bringing events. From that sense, betide developed the meaning of something happening or coming upon someone.
