父母の兄弟である男性、またはその配偶者を指す親族名で、日本語の「おじ」に当たる。英語では父方か母方か、年上か年下かを区別せずに使えるため、日本語の伯父・叔父の両方に対応する基本語である。
An uncle is the brother of your mother or father, or the husband of your aunt. It is a family relationship word used in everyday life. In some cultures, people also use it for an older man they know well, but the family meaning is the main one.

uncle は古フランス語 oncle を経て、ラテン語 avunculus「母方のおじ」にさかのぼります。もともとは親族関係を細かく区別する語でしたが、英語では広く「おじ」全般を指すようになりました。関連語に avuncular, nephew があります。
Uncle came into English through Old French oncle, from Latin avunculus. In Latin, it originally meant a mother's brother, so it was more specific than modern English uncle. Over time, English widened the meaning to any male sibling of a parent; avuncular comes from the same root.
