An introduction is the first part that presents a person, topic, book, speech, or idea. It gives basic information so people can understand what comes next. The word is often used in writing, presentations, and when meeting someone for the first time.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
introduce（紹介する・導入する）の名詞形と覚えるのが最短です。まず「人や物を初めて相手の前に出す」のが introduce、その行為や最初の説明部分が introduction。presentation 全体ではなく、聞き手を本題へ入れていく入口のイメージを持つと定着します。book introduction, self-introduction, the introduction of a new system の形で見て、「自己紹介」「本の序論」「新制度の導入」の3場面を一緒に覚えると強いです。似た beginning より、やや説明的でフォーマルな語です。
Think of introduction as the noun form of introduce. If introduce is bringing a person or idea in for the first time, introduction is that first step or opening part. Remember three common scenes together: self-introduction, book introduction, and the introduction of a new system.

introduction はラテン語 introductio に由来し、intro-「内へ」+ ducere「導く」から成ります。つまり本来は「中へ導き入れること」で、人を話題や本文の中へ案内する感覚から「導入・はじめに」の意味になりました。関連語に introduce, conduct があります。
Introduction comes from Latin introductio, from intro- meaning "inward" and ducere meaning "to lead." The original idea was "leading something or someone inside." That sense later became "bringing a person into a topic" or "the opening part that leads into a text." It is related to introduce and conduct.
