A prologue is an opening part at the beginning of a book, play, movie, or other work. It gives background information or introduces the situation before the main story starts. It is often used to help the audience understand what comes next.

monologue, dialogue, epilogue を知っていると覚えやすい語です。-logue は「語り・話の部分」と見て、prologue は本編の前に置かれる語り、epilogue は最後の締めの語り、と対で押さえると定着します。単なる「第1章」ではなく、背景説明や世界観の導入をする前置きの場面を指すことが多いです。小説や劇で「最初に状況を示す導入部」と結びつけると忘れにくくなります。
