小説や劇などの本編の終わりに付け加えられる締めくくりの部分を指す名詞です。本編の結末を補足したり、登場人物のその後を示したりして、読者や観客に余韻や納得感を与える役割を持ちます。
An epilogue is a final section at the end of a book, play, or other story that comes after the main ending. It usually tells what happens later or gives extra information about the characters or events.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
prologue が「物語の前に置く導入」なら、epi- が付く epilogue は「本編のあとに来る締めの言葉」と対で覚えると残りやすいです。-logue は dialogue, monologue と同じく「言葉・語り」の仲間。小説や映画で the epilogue shows what happened later のように、結末後の人物のその後を補う場面でよく使います。ending そのものではなく、ending のあとに添える後日談・補足だと押さえると、sequel や appendix と混同しにくくなります。
Pair it with `prologue`. If a prologue comes before the story, an `epi-`logue comes after it. The `-logue` part is the same as in `dialogue` and `monologue`, so think of it as the final bit of talking after the main ending.

epilogue はギリシャ語 epilogos にさかのぼり、epi-「上に・後で」+ logos「言葉」から成ります。ラテン語・フランス語を経て入り、原義は「最後に付け加える言葉」。prologue や dialogue と同じ logos の仲間です。
Epilogue comes from Greek epilogos, built from epi- meaning "after" or "in addition" and logos meaning "word" or "speech." It passed through Latin and French before entering English. Its original sense was "words added at the end," which later became the closing part of a work. It is related to prologue and dialogue, which share the same logos root.
