colophon はギリシャ語 kolophon「頂点・仕上げ」から来た語で、本の末尾に置かれる奥付を指すのは「最後の仕上げ」の感覚からです。形を分けにくい単純語ですが、colophony や古地名 Colophon に同形が残り、作品を締めくくる位置づけが意味の核にあります。
From Greek kolophon, meaning a summit, finishing touch, or final point. In books, it came to mean the note placed at the end because it was seen as the work's finishing part. The same root appears in colophony, and the idea of completion stayed central as the word moved into English.
