ギリシャ語 philosophia から。philo-（愛する）+ sophia（知恵）で「知を愛すること」が原義。ピタゴラスが自らを「知恵ある者」でなく「知を愛する者（philosophos）」と呼んだのが起源とされる。関連語: philanthropy（博愛）、sophomore（2年生＝賢い愚者）。
