17世紀の米大学語で、古形 sophumer は sophism 系の「議論好きな者」に由来し、のちにギリシャ語 sophos「賢い」+ moros「愚かな」の連想で今の形になりました。『少し賢くなったつもりだが、まだ未熟な2年生』という皮肉がこもる語で、sophist や sophomoric が related です。
