A sophomore is a student in the second year of high school or college, especially in the US. The word is mainly used in American English and describes a student’s year, not their age.

sophomore の語源・成り立ち Etymology
17世紀の米大学語で、古形 sophumer は sophism 系の「議論好きな者」に由来し、のちにギリシャ語 sophos「賢い」+ moros「愚かな」の連想で今の形になりました。『少し賢くなったつもりだが、まだ未熟な2年生』という皮肉がこもる語で、sophist や sophomoric が related です。
"Sophomore" began as American college slang in the 17th century. An earlier form, "sophumer," seems to have meant a noisy or argumentative person, and it was later reshaped by association with Greek sophos "wise" and moros "foolish." That gave the word an ironic feeling: someone who thinks they are wiser, but is still immature. Related words include "sophist" and "sophomoric."
