岩や土壌が雨や風、水などによって徐々に削られ、失われていく過程です。自然界では常に起こっている現象です。
Erosion is the gradual wearing away of soil, rock, or land by water, wind, or other natural forces. It is commonly discussed in geography, environmental studies, and farming. The word can also be used in a more general way for the slow loss of something, such as trust or support.

まず soil erosion（土壌侵食）と coastal erosion（海岸侵食）をセットで覚えると、自然現象の語として芯がつかめます。ポイントは damage や destruction のような「急な破壊」ではなく、雨・風・川・波で地面や岩が少しずつ削られ、形が変わっていくこと。corrosion は金属の腐食、erosion は土・岩・海岸の侵食、と素材で分けると混同しにくいです。さらに the erosion of trust のように、信頼や権威がじわじわ失われる比喩表現にも広がります。

erosion の語源・成り立ち Etymology
erosionはラテン語erodere「かじり取る」に由来し、e-「外へ」+ rodere「かじる」に分けられます。corrodeやrodentも同じrod-系で、表面が少しずつ噛み削られるイメージを持つと、「侵食」がただの減少でないと分かります。
Erosion comes from Latin erodere, meaning "to gnaw away," from e- "out" and rodere "to gnaw." The central image is of something being worn away little by little, as if bitten off in small amounts. Related words include corrode and rodent, which share the same rod- root.
