泥やシルトなどの細粒子が河川や貯水池に堆積する現象。水流が遅くなると沈着が進み、水位低下や航海障害などを引き起こす。
Siltation is the process in which fine soil, sand, or mud builds up in a river, lake, harbor, or similar place. This can make the water shallower and may cause problems for boats, drainage, or the environment. The word is common in geography, engineering, and environmental studies.

まず silt を核に覚える。silt は sand より細かく、mud ほど粘らない、水に運ばれる細かな土砂。そこに -ation が付くと「その現象・進行」なので、siltation は「土砂がたまっていくこと」。silting up a river / harbor と一緒に覚えると、川や港がだんだん浅くなる絵で定着する。erosion が削る側、siltation は積もる側。sedimentation はもっと広く「堆積一般」なので、siltation は「silt がたまる」と少し具体的だと押さえると混同しにくい。
