水や風などの自然の力によって物質が少しずつ堆積して蓄積される過程。地質学では、砂や泥などの堆積物が積み重なって層を形成していく現象を指します。
Deposition is the process in which a substance is gradually placed or built up on a surface. It is commonly used in science and geology for things like sand, minerals, or other material collecting over time. The word is usually used in technical contexts.

deposition は、まず知っている deposit（置く・たまる）を足場にすると覚えやすい語。地学では、砂・泥・火山灰などが水や風で運ばれ、低い場所に少しずつ置かれて layer を作る場面を思い浮かべると定着する。erosion が「削って運び去る」側なら、deposition は「運ばれてきた物が積もる」側。river deposition, sediment deposition の形で見ることが多い。なお法律の deposition は「証言録取」で別義なので、地学では「堆積の deposition」とセットで切り分けて覚えると混同しにくい。
