A dismount is the act of getting off a horse, bicycle, motorcycle, or similar thing. In sports such as gymnastics, it also means the final movement used to leave a piece of equipment. The word is usually used for a controlled or expected way of coming off something.

mount を「またがる・乗る」の基本語として押さえると覚えやすいです。mount a horse, mount a bike の反対が dismount で、dis- は「離す・外す」の感覚。つまり「乗った状態を外す」→「降りる」。特に horse との相性が強く、乗馬では mount と dismount が対で出ます。get off よりやや場面が限られ、馬・自転車・バイクなど『またがって乗るもの』から降りる語だと整理すると定着します。

dismount は dis-「離れて」＋ mount「乗る・上がる」。mount は古フランス語 monter、さらにラテン語 mons/mont-「山」にさかのぼり、『高い所へ上がる』の反転が『乗り物から降りる』になった。mountain や surmount も同根。
Dismount is made from dis- "away from" and mount. Mount came through Old French monter from Latin mons or mont-, meaning "mountain," so its early sense was "go up" or "climb." Dismount grew as the opposite movement: getting down from a raised place such as a horse or vehicle. Mountain and surmount share the same root.
