A layer is one level or sheet of something that lies over or under another. The word is often used for physical materials like clothing, soil, or cake, and also for parts of something more complex.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
lay（置く）を知っていれば、layer は「置かれたものが一段できた状態」→「層」とつながる。ケーキのクリームの層、layers of clothing（重ね着）、a layer of paint（塗りの一層）、地層のように、薄い面が順に重なる場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。upper/lower layer のように上下関係でもよく出る。抽象的にも layers of meaning, security layer のように「段階・仕組みの一層」へ広がる。later と見た目が少し似るので混同注意。
Connect `layer` with `lay`: if you lay things one on another, they make layers. Think of a cake layer, a layer of paint, or layers of clothing. Be careful not to mix it up with `later`, which looks similar.
