cuticle はラテン語 cuticula「小さな皮」に由来し、cutis「皮膚」に縮小辞 -cula が付いた形です。cutaneous と同根で、「皮膚のごく薄い外皮」という原義から、爪や毛の表面を覆うキューティクルの意味になりました。
