The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin. It protects the body from the outside environment and helps prevent water loss. This word is mostly used in biology and medicine.

epidermisは後期ラテン語経由でギリシャ語epidermis「皮膚の上の層」から。epi-「上に」+ derma「皮膚」に分かれ、文字どおり「肌のいちばん上」なので表皮を指す。関連語はdermatologyとhypodermic。
Epidermis comes through Late Latin from Greek `epidermis`, literally meaning "upon the skin." It is made from `epi-`, "on" or "upon," and `derma`, "skin," seen also in `dermatology` and `hypodermic`. The word kept this literal sense and came to refer to the outermost layer of the skin.
