まず biology, geology と同じく、末尾の「-ology」を見たら『〜学・学問分野』だと押さえる。すると dermatology は derm-/dermat- を足して『skin の学問』と読める。丸暗記するより、dermatologist は皮膚科医、epidermis / dermis は皮膚関連、という語群でまとめると定着しやすい。実際にも dermatology clinic, cosmetic dermatology など、病気だけでなく肌トラブルや美容の文脈でよく現れる。dermatologist と混同しないこと。
The ending `-ology` means “the study of,” as in `biology` or `geology`. So `dermatology` is the study field built from `derm/dermat`, a skin-related root. Remember it together with `dermatologist` and `dermis`, but do not mix up the field with the doctor.
