詩や韻文の対比で、自然な語調で書かれた通常の文体のことです。小説、評論、記事など、ほぼすべての非詩的な文章に用いられます。
Prose is ordinary written or spoken language that is not poetry. It is used in novels, essays, articles, and everyday communication, and it usually follows normal sentence structure.

prose は verse（詩・韻文）と対で覚えるのが最短です。行を折り、リズムや韻を意識する verse に対し、prose は新聞・小説・評論の本文のように、段落の中を普通の文がそのまま続く文章。まず「英語の文章の標準形＝prose」と置くと忘れにくいです。prosaic は「散文的な→平凡な」の意味にも広がるので、詩的でない日常的な文体という感触まで一緒に結びつけると定着します。

prose はラテン語 prosa (oratio)「まっすぐ進む話し方」に由来し、詩のような韻律や折り返しのない文を指しました。ことばを曲げずに直進させる感覚から「散文」となり、関連語は prosaic、対比語は verse です。
Prose comes from Latin prosa, short for prosa oratio, meaning "straightforward speech." The image is of language moving straight ahead, unlike verse, which is shaped by rhythm and line patterns. Because of that, prose came to mean ordinary written or spoken language without poetic form. A related English word is prosaic.
