verse の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 versus（行・列）から。vertere（向きを変える）の過去分詞で、「畑を耕す時に折り返す一行」が原義。reverse（逆転）やversion（版）と同根。詩を一行ずつ折り返して書くことから「韻文・詩」の意味になった。
From Latin versūs, meaning a row or line, from vertere, "to turn." It first referred to the turn made at the end of a line when plowing a field. Later, because lines of poetry also turn one after another, it came to mean a line of verse and then poetry itself. Related English words include reverse and version.
