無知や迷いから抜け出して深く理解すること、または知識を得て視野が開けることを表す名詞。宗教や哲学では「悟り」、歴史では理性や科学を重視した十八世紀ヨーロッパの啓蒙思想・啓蒙時代を指すこともある。
