解説 Definition
basketball は、ボールを高い位置の輪に入れて得点を競う球技「バスケットボール」を表します。その競技で使うボールも指します。
A game in which two teams score points by throwing a ball through raised hoops, or the round ball used in this game. The game name is usually uncountable, while the physical ball is countable.
使い方 Usage
- 競技名は通常、数えない名詞で、play basketball（競技をする）、watch basketball（観戦する）と冠詞なしで使います。 The sport name is usually uncountable. Use play basketball and watch basketball without an article.
- ボールは数えられるので、buy a basketball（バスケットボールを1個買う）のように使います。 The physical ball is countable, as in buy a basketball.
- basketball team は「バスケットボールのチーム」、basketball court は「バスケットボールのコート」です。 Use basketball team for a team in the sport and basketball court for the place where it is played.

英語 basket（かご）+ ball（ボール）の合成語。1891年にカナダ人ジェームズ・ネイスミスが考案し、桃のかごをゴールに使ったことから命名。basket は古フランス語 bascauda（洗い桶）に由来するとされる。スポーツ名がそのまま道具の描写になっている。
Basketball is a compound of basket and ball. The sport was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian physical-education instructor, who initially used peach baskets as goals. Its name therefore directly describes the equipment used in the original game. Basket entered English through Anglo-French and is commonly connected with Old French forms related to bascauda, a type of container, while ball is an old Germanic word.
