英語 basket（かご）+ ball（ボール）の合成語。1891年にカナダ人ジェームズ・ネイスミスが考案し、桃のかごをゴールに使ったことから命名。basket は古フランス語 bascauda（洗い桶）に由来するとされる。スポーツ名がそのまま道具の描写になっている。
Basketball is a compound of basket and ball. The sport was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian physical-education instructor, who initially used peach baskets as goals. Its name therefore directly describes the equipment used in the original game. Basket entered English through Anglo-French and is commonly connected with Old French forms related to bascauda, a type of container, while ball is an old Germanic word.
