英語 volley（ボレー、一斉射撃）+ ball（ボール）の合成語。volley はフランス語 volée（飛行）からで、さらにラテン語 volare（飛ぶ）に遡る。関連語: volley（連打）、volatile（揮発性の＝飛び散る）。ボールを地面に落とさず「飛ばし合う」競技という命名。1895年にアメリカで考案された際の造語。
Volleyball is a compound of volley and ball. Volley entered English through French volée, associated with flight and ultimately with Latin volare, “to fly.” The sport was invented in Massachusetts by William G. Morgan in 1895 and was initially called mintonette. The name volley ball was soon adopted because players volleyed the ball across a net; the modern closed spelling became standard later.
