The judiciary is the part of a country's government that includes judges and courts. It is responsible for interpreting laws and making legal decisions.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
judge を知っていれば覚えやすい語です。judiciary は「裁く側全体」、つまり個々の judge ではなく、裁判所・裁判官・司法制度をまとめて指す名詞。judicial が「司法の／裁判上の」という形容詞なのに対し、judiciary は組織そのものを表します。legislature（立法）、executive（行政）と並べて三権分立で覚えると定着しやすいです。ニュースでは the judiciary, an independent judiciary の形が多く、「政治家ではなく、法律にもとづいて判断する側」と結びつけると意味がぶれません。

ラテン語 iudiciarius「裁判に関する」が語源で、もとは iudex「裁く人」にさかのぼります。iudex は ius「法」+ dicere「言う」から成り、judge や judicial も同根なので、「法を言い渡すもの」が司法になると納得できます。
Judiciary comes from Latin iudiciarius, meaning "connected with judgment or courts." It goes back to iudex, meaning "judge," built from ius "law" and dicere "to say." The same roots appear in English judge and judicial, carrying the idea of "speaking the law."
