6本の脚と翅を持つ小さな動物の総称。蝶、蜂、トンボ、バッタなどが含まれる動物である。
An insect is a very small animal with six legs, and usually a body divided into three main parts. Common insects include ants, bees, and flies. The word is mainly used in science, nature, and everyday talk about small bugs.

insect の語源・成り立ち Etymology
insectはラテン語insectumに由来し、in-「中へ」+ secare「切る」から成り、直訳すると「切れ目のあるもの」です。虫の体が頭・胸・腹へ区切られて見えることからこの名が付き、観察の視点がそのまま語になったとわかります。sectionやdissectも同じsecareの仲間です。
Insect comes from Latin insectum, from in- and secare, meaning "to cut." The idea was "something cut into sections," referring to the way an insect's body looks divided into parts. The same root appears in English words like section and dissect.
