解説 Definition
体が頭部・胸部・腹部に分かれ、成虫では通常6本の脚を持つ小さな動物を指します。多くは翅を持ちますが、アリやノミのように翅がないものもいるため、翅は必須条件ではありません。
An insect is a very small animal with six legs, and usually a body divided into three main parts. Common insects include ants, bees, and flies. The word is mainly used in science, nature, and everyday talk about small bugs.

insectはラテン語insectumに由来し、in-「中へ」+ secare「切る」から成り、直訳すると「切れ目のあるもの」です。虫の体が頭・胸・腹へ区切られて見えることからこの名が付き、観察の視点がそのまま語になったとわかります。sectionやdissectも同じsecareの仲間です。
