An arachnid is an animal from the group that includes spiders, scorpions, ticks, and mites. Arachnids usually have eight legs, and the word is used mainly in biology or when describing these animals.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
arachno- を見たら「クモ関係」と反応できるようにすると覚えやすいです。arachnophobia（クモ恐怖症）や arachnoid と同じ芯を持つ語で、まず spider を連想すると入りやすい。ただし arachnid は spider そのものではなく、クモ・サソリ・ダニをまとめた分類名。語尾 -id は学術語で「〜類・〜の仲間」の感じなので、「8本脚の仲間」という枠で固定するとよいです。insect は広い意味の「虫」でも、典型的には6本脚。そこで「6本脚は insect、8本脚は arachnid」と対比すると混同しにくくなります。
