verb

隣接りんせつする

解説 Definition

土地や建物などが境界を共有し、すぐ隣り合って接していることを表す動詞。

To share a boundary with another piece of land, building, or physical feature. The two things touch directly rather than merely being near each other.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

abut は、二つの土地や建物が境界線で端と端をぴたりと接している像で覚えると定着しやすい動詞です。abut A の形で「Aに隣接する」となり、Our garden abuts the school grounds. なら庭と校地の間に別の土地がありません。be near「近くにある」は間が空いていても使えますが、abut は境界を共有するほど直接接している点が重要です。property abuts the river、hotel abuts a park のように、不動産・都市計画・地理の文脈でよく現れるため、地図上で二つの区画が辺を共有する図を思い浮かべると残りやすいです。

Picture two properties whose edges meet exactly on a map, with no space or other property between them. Remember that “near” allows a gap, while abut means that the boundaries directly touch.

例文

abut の語源・成り立ち Etymology

中英語 abutten は古フランス語 abuter / aboter にさかのぼり、a-「〜へ」+ but「端・目標」が核です。原義は「端と端がぶつかる」で、そこから土地や壁が境界でぴたりと接する意になりました。関連語は butt, abutment。

It comes from Middle English abutten and Old French abuter or aboter. Its parts conveyed the idea of reaching an end or boundary, leading to the sense of touching edge to edge.
