reinforcement は re-「再び」+ enforce「力を与える」+ -ment「こと」から成る。force や fortify もラテン語 fortis「強い」と同根で、もともと「もう一度強くすること」だと分かれば、補強という意味がそのまま立ち上がる。
Reinforcement is made from re-, enforce, and the noun ending -ment. Enforce comes through French and Latin from the idea of giving strength, based on the same root as force. So the original sense is "making strong again" or "adding strength." That is why the word developed the meaning of extra support, help, or protection.
