buttress は古フランス語 buter／bouter「突く、押す」から出た語で、もともとは「横からぐっと押して支えるもの」です。語幹 butt- にその感覚が残り、rebut も同系統なので、壁を外から押し返して支える控え壁だと腑に落ちます。
Buttress came through Old French from verbs meaning "to strike," "push," or "thrust." The original idea was something that pushes against a wall from the side to support it. From that physical sense, it developed into the general meaning of support or reinforcement. It is related to rebut, which comes from the same French root.
