A column is a tall vertical pillar that supports part of a building. It can also mean a vertical section of words or numbers on a page, in a table, or in a newspaper. The exact meaning depends on whether the context is architecture or written information.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
建物の「柱」が中心イメージです。まず pillar に近い語として覚え、column は「細長く縦に並ぶもの」へ意味が広がると整理すると残りやすいです。だから新聞やWebの column は「縦の欄」、表では row が横、column が縦。a stone column, a column of smoke, a newspaper column のように、一本の柱だけでなく上に伸びるまとまりにも使えます。columnist も「コラムを書く人」。colon や colony とはつづりが近いだけで別語です。
