unaffordableはun-「できない」+ afford「まかなう」+ -able「可能な」から成る語です。affordは古英語geforthian「やり遂げる、前へ進める」に由来し、forthやfurtherと遠い親類なので、「そこまで進める余力がない」と考えると手が届かない意味になります。
Unaffordable is built from un-, afford, and -able. Afford comes from Old English geforthian, which meant "to carry through" or "to accomplish," and is distantly related to forth and further. The idea changed from being able to manage or bring something about to being able to pay for it. With un- and -able, the modern word means "not able to be paid for" in origin.
