adjoinはad-「〜へ」＋joinの核になる語根「結びつける」から成る語で、ラテン語adjungere、古フランス語を経て入った。joinやjunctionも同根なので、「結び付くように隣り合う」と考えると意味がつかみやすい。
Adjoin comes from Latin adjungere, through Old French, and is built from ad- "to" and a root meaning "to join." The basic idea was "to join to" or "to connect closely." From there it developed the sense of being next to something, as if joined at the side. Related English words include join and junction.
