adjoining は adjoin＋-ing。adjoin は古フランス語を経て、ラテン語 adiungere「〜に結びつける」に由来します。ad-「〜へ」＋join「結ぶ」から、横につながるものを表します。
Adjoining comes from adjoin plus the suffix -ing. Adjoin came through Old French from Latin adiungere, meaning "to join to" or "to connect to." From the ideas of ad- "to" and join, the word developed the sense of being connected at the side or next to something.
