解説 Definition
境界や面が接していて、途中に切れ目や離れた部分がない状態を表す形容詞。土地や地域については「隣り合った」「地続きの」の意味でよく使われ、物や領域が一体となって連なっている場合にも用いられる。
Contiguous means touching or connected without any gap between them. It is often used for areas of land, regions, rooms, or periods of time that follow directly one after another.

`Contiguous` is close to `contact` and a little like `continuous`, which helps with the idea of things touching without a break. Use a map image: `contiguous states` are connected directly, not separated. It is stronger than just `adjacent`, because it suggests one unbroken area.

contiguous はラテン語 con-「共に」+ tangere「触れる」から生じた contiguus に由来し、原義は「互いに接している」です。contact や tangible と同じ tang- 系の語で、「境目でぴたりと触れている」と思うと、連続した・隣接したの意味が腑に落ちます。
Contiguous comes from Latin contiguus, from con- "together" and tangere "to touch." Its original sense was "touching" or "in contact at the edges." From that, it came to mean areas or things that are next to each other without a break; contact and tangible come from the same root.
