abutting は abut「接する・突き当たる」の現在分詞で、古フランス語 a「〜へ」+ boter/bouter「押す」にさかのぼります。button や rebut と同系の押す感覚があり、「境界まで押し当てられるように接する」ので「隣接している」という意味になります。
