Model came into English through French and Italian modello, ultimately from Latin modulus, meaning a small measure or standard. Modulus is a diminutive of modus, “measure” or “manner.” The word first referred to a scaled representation or prescribed form. From that central idea, it developed senses for a design, a particular product version, an exemplary pattern, and a person used to display clothing or other goods.
